New Member Orientation
Welcome to new members of the Society of the Cincinnati, our nation’s oldest patriotic organization! The Society’s purpose, as defined by our founders in 1783, is to perpetuate the memory and ideals of the American Revolution as well as to extend the fellowship of the heroic officers who led the struggle for American independence. Our founders described this organization as “One Society of Friends.” The spirit of brotherhood that led the Continental Army and Navy officers to create our Society lives today among their descendants. This brotherhood also works with determination and teamwork to promote the memory of the American Revolution and honor its heroes, fulfilling the aim of the officers who founded the Society to perpetuate the memory of the Revolution, which they called “that vast event.” The American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati, Inc.—our educational arm—supports advanced study, presents exhibitions and other public programs, advocates battlefield preservation and appreciation, and provides resources to teachers and students to enrich understanding of our War for Independence.
In addition to the materials you receive from the General Society and your constituent society, the following video will introduce you to the Society and the rewards and responsibilities of membership. We hope you will engage to the fullest in this brotherhood—participate in meetings, enjoy social events, support our shared mission in spirit as well as financially, and take full advantage of opportunities to make new friends within our group.
